On May 3rd, 2012, Dr. Iyengar and Nulogix were awarded third prize in the 2012 Innovation 2 Industry (i2i) Florida competition. This competition, organized and hosted by the Enterprise Charlotte Economic Council, recognizes Nulogix for the invention of a device with an innovative and patented technology that enables a person to see changes in intra ocular pressure by observing their eye in a mirror. The purpose of this invention is to ensure that glaucoma's silent damage is detected as early as possible,well ahead of any damage.
On April 10th, 2012, State Farm awarded FIU's Discovery Lab lead by Dr. Ram Iyengar, SCIS Director and Ryder Professor, a donation of $50,000 to further the lab's mission to inspire student innovation. State Farm has designated FIU as one of 20 Universities in the Nation where they recruit exclusively. This grant award was one of only four such grants awarded in the area of IT Systems this year by State Farm.
The Discovery Lab is aimed at developing products for the marketplace. The laboratory provides students with the hands-on experiences they need to solve real-world challenges, develops student-led research opportunities, fosters students’ entrepreneurial skills, and trains a new generation of IT professionals

How does it feel to spend 48hrs programming non-stop to build computer games as part of the 2012 Global Game Jam (GGJ)? Just ask FIU Computer Science PhD Student, Frank Hernandez, Organizer of the GGJ Miami site and the Game Developers Guild (www.gamedevelopersguild.com) which was hosted at FIU's Collaborative Open Innovation Lab (coil.fiu.edu) January 27-29th. "It was very exciting to see our student's creativity and programming talent coming together to build these games". The end result, four exhausted programming teams, four intriguing PC games, many with original music and graphics, which explored the game jam theme, a serpent drawn in the shape of a circle biting it's tail. A $75 prize was awarded for First Place, courtesy of Ultimate Software. Eleven competitors worked on six problems for four hours. Each solution program had to be accepted by the online UVA site. Many thanks to Alexis Jefferson, Jesus Ramos, and Daniel Rodriguez, who contributed problem solutions and assistance with scoring! Try solving the six problems here. If you are able to solve at least two, perhaps you should consider joining our training sessions! We meet every Thursday 3:30-4:45pm, in room ECS 141. We will hold a second competition during March.
Information Technology major April Perry, who is also captain of the FIU women’s soccer team, has earned a spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Region team as a second team member. The award caps off a stellar season for Perry who was the only FIU player to be named as a first team All-Sun Belt Conference performer.
Perry led the FIU women’s soccer team to its second ever Sunbelt Conference Tournament Championship and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 18 years. br>

SCIS students selected by the PIRE program will become part of a prestigious international research network focusing on using cyberinfrastructure to solve challenging societal problems while training a generation of globally-oriented IT professionals who will become leaders in industry and academia.
The SCIS advisors will help you with any questions you have about the Computer Science degree program, Information Technology programs (Undergraduates) and advise which courses would be best to take.
