Frequently Asked Questions

What is Internet2 (I2)?
Two national high speed networks dedicated to research and education: Abilene and vBNS. Internet2 is also the name of an organization of Universities and other research partners for developing the I2 network and emerging technologies. FIU is one of over 150 Internet2 members and joins 70+ universities/research partners on the Abilene network.

The National Science Foundation funds our connection to I2. The ANIR division oversees funding for the grant.

What is I2's purpose and how did it come to be?
I2 was built to provide high speed data communications between National Research labs, Universities, Government Research facililties and other research partners for the development of a variety of research activies which could not be conducted on the commercial Internet. NSF funding to create the initial network backbone (vBNS) began in 1995 and will end in 2000. Both networks will be sustained and grow through future governmental and institutional funding.

How can I use I2 for my research?
I2 is integrated as part of the FIU campus network. Your data will automatically travel to another I2 member via Abilene and, if necessary, through a peering network like vBNS. Development of applications may require special software or software which is customized to take full advantage of the high-data transmission speeds available on I2.

FIU was awarded its High Performance Grant in Feb. 1999. FIU has been an I2 charter member since 1997.

How is our I2 connection funded?
Our I2 network connection is funded through NSF Program 98-102, proposal #9876409. The PI is Dr. Naphtali Rishe, Director of the High Performance Database Research Center. The award amount was for $250K and over $500K in matching funds from FIU.

HPDRC is a NASA funded research center which has developed database technologies capable of efficiently managing multimedia content.

------ Events --------------------

We just completed our first 6 months. Check out our overview to find out what we have accomplished so far.

NLANR/I2 Techs Workshop
Dec. 5-8th 1999, Kovens Center, FIU

FIU welcomes the NLANR/I2 Techs Workshop attendees to South Florida.

The latest in high perfomance networking technologies in the areas of network performance measurement and monitoring, applications, and network tools will be discussed; including Multicast, QoS/Qbone and TCP Tuning. For more infomation, agenda, and registration please visit the Workshop website.

------- Notable -------------------
"The I2 connection will create funding opportunities [like] the federal government's Next Generation Internet (NGI) Initiative and is a call for more interdisciplinary research efforts on campus." -- FIU NOW Apr. 99

The Abilene Network operations center is located at Indiana University. Information on the network status can be found online.

How can I use I2 to leverage current or proposed research?
As a researcher you should consider how using a high performance network can improve your research effort and include these points on your research proposals and grant reports. See our Funding Opportunities page for several grants which support such research efforts.

I am not currently conducting research, can I still use I2?
Yes. Our institution can fully utilize the network and interact with other institutions on it. However, abuse of the network for non-University activities, including commercial or personal use is prohibited.

Where can I find more information about I2 and ongoing research efforts?
The Internet2 web site is one location. Another is the National Laboratory for Applied Network Research (NLANR).

What research applications are being developed at FIU using I2?

Please see our research application page..

How is FIU connected to I2?

Please see our network status page.
