Santa Claus (also known as Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, or simply Santa) is a character in various and other cultures who gives presents to children on Christmas Day.
Conventionally Santa Claus is portrayed as a kindly, round-bellied, merry, bespectacled man in a red coat trimmed with white fur, with a long white beard. On Christmas Eve, he rides in his sleigh pulled by flying reindeer from house to house to give presents to children. To get inside the house, he comes down the chimney and lands in the fireplace. During the rest of the year he lives together with his wife Mrs. Claus and his elves who serve as his toy production staff. His home is usually given as either the North Pole in the US and Canada, Korvatunturi in Finnish Lapland, Dalecarlia in Sweden, Greenland, or Caesarea when identified as Saint Basil; traditions vary. Lapland is the most common home for Santa and is known the world over. It is also used as the address when children post to him their Christmas Lists.
Since there would be extreme difficulty in delivering presents to all of the believing children in one night, and since some houses may not have chimneys, "magic" is usually used as an explaining device.
Children from all over the world visit the renowned "Santa's Kingdom" in Finnish Lapland where they can visit the "real" Santa, ride on a reindeer sleigh or see the Elves Workshop before heading back to the Ice Hotel for the night before re-living the magical experience all over again the next day.
